Kathleen300Having grown up close to the Alps, Kathleen’s earliest and fondest memories include family ski trips to majestic snow-capped mountains where trails abound. But it wasn’t until grad school that trail running became a routine part of her life-mostly as a means to break from long hours of work and study. Shortly after moving to Seattle, she dabbled in marathon running and triathlon (ironman); in 2006, she ran her first trail ultra marathon and has been competing in the 50k-100 mile distances ever since. With a longtime interest in health and disease prevention, Kathleen landed a career in public health (epidemiology) and has spent the past 15 years working in the areas of infectious disease, workers’ compensation, on the job injuries, opioid dosing trends and mortality, and health outcomes research. John FiddlerJohn’s mountain life began before he can even remember when his parents had him on skis at 18 months of age.  Since then he has been chasing snow and trying to find ways to slide across it.  Down hill skiing, telimark skiing, kite skiing, and for a period of time in the 90s he was nationally ranked in the sport of biathlon (X-country skiing and shooting).  Other adventures have included climbing on multiple continents with the highest summits being Aconcagua and Denali, an attempt to sail a 36′ sailboat to Greenland and back, and most recently a solo sea kayak expedition down the length of Baja California.  To pay the bills John works as an emergency/critical care veterinarian.  Currently John is traveling with his wife Kathleen Egan on a multi-year trip as they wander the planet trekking, trail running, sight seeing, and doing volunteer veterinary work.  To follow their adventures, please visit: www.knuckleheadadventuretours.blogspot.com.

 

 

Seth300Seth  got started adventuring in his teens when he dropped out of high school and backpacked from Hong Kong to Portugal. Seth successfully reached the summit of Mt. Everest in 2011 and ran across the United States in 2012. He has run ‘a lot’ of trail ultras in the Pacific Northwest and has set only known, and fastest known times on Mt Adams, Kilimanjaro, and on the Annapurna Circuit. Seth helps organize adventures for others in Nepal working with his partner Dorjee Sherpa. In his down time he conducts health outcomes research at the University of Washington where he is a clinical associate professor.     Wow. You are all so inspiring! I just read every word of this site. THANK-YOU for posting about your experiences, your route and maps. I am definitely going to use your beta in conjunction with information from others including Robin. I am planning to do the GHT solo this coming summer/fall.
    If it is not too much trouble, I would LOVE the opportunity to pick your brain(s) about your experiences on the trail, including challenges or things you would have done differently. One thing I am wondering about it why you chose to go East-to-West instead of West-to-East. I’d also love to hear any advice you have on how/where you got the necessary permits. In addition, I would like to hear what you did to train/prepare for the technical passes (you say “as we went into them with relatively little knowledge”). I am certain that as a solo-ist I will have to modify my route or inevitably hire guides as necessary to complete the entirety.
